How to Draw "Cthulhu Rising"

Welcome to this tutorial on How To Draw and bring your own Cthulhu artwork to life! Whether you're working on paper or digitally using software like Krita or GIMP, here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own monster masterpiece.

Step 1: Of How To Draw Start with Silhouettes

Begin by playing with silhouettes to get your creative juices flowing. Think of this as a warm-up exercise. Start with a basic human figure, even if it's just a stick figure. Draw as many as you need until you find one that you're very happy with. This will serve as the foundation for posing your monster. as demonstrated below remeber it doesnt have to be perfect we are just getting the brain flowing.

Step 2: Pose the Monster

Whether you're working digitally or on paper, there are some differences in the approach.

Digitally

  1. Scale the Silhouette: Start by scaling the silhouette you’re using for the piece in my case I picked the last one.

  2. Add a Paint Layer: Create a new paint layer and begin constructing the creature.

  3. Piece by Piece: I prefer to work on the pieces one by one. In this case, I started with the head. Form a basic shape of Cthulhu's head and face based on the silhouette. Once you have the shape of the head, add details until it's exactly how you want it.

  4. Other Parts: Move on to the arms, legs, body, and wings. Follow the same process—start with a basic shape based on the silhouette and then add details to each part one at a time until you're satisfied with the overall look.

On Paper

  1. Pose the Monster: Use the silhouette to guide the pose of your monster. Start with a basic stick figure and gradually add details.

  2. Light Outline: If drawing in a sketchbook, you only need to lightly outline the shape of the silhouette to the scale of the creature you want.

  3. Piece by Piece: Just like with the digital approach, start with the head. Draw a basic shape of Cthulhu's head and face based on the silhouette, then add details until you're happy with it.

  4. Other Parts: Proceed to the arms, legs, body, and wings, building on the basic silhouette and adding details one part at a time until the whole monster comes together.

  5. Background Considerations: Keep your background in mind. If you don’t have to draw the full body of the creature due to background obstructions you plan to draw in, don't think ahead. Digitally, you can get away with drawing the full body because you can add layers.

There he is nasty isn't he I get chills just looking at him next we start shading if your coloring digitally and using Krita I recommend coloring him in a different layer to avoid getting those annoying white specs everywhere if anyone knows another way to fix that problem let me know..

STEP 3 Background Next, we want to begin working on the background. If you’re working on paper, you should either already have a background in place before starting your monster, or you may not have drawn the full creature yet. This will depend on how your background interacts with the rest of your artwork.

In my case, since I’m working digitally, I add a new layer specifically for the background. This allows me to create the background without worrying about erasing parts of Cthulhu and saves time. By keeping the layer on a transparency setting, I can easily adjust the colors and shading of the waves. As you can see, I’m aiming to create some stormy waves in this scene.

I could have considered this drawing complete at this stage, but I wasn't entirely happy with it. I had shaded the waves and even added a Cthulhu cultist shining a lantern at the monster to provide some scale. However, I felt that Cthulhu still didn't stand out enough; he looked a bit plain. As a god, Cthulhu should appear more menacing and prominent. Below, you will see the final result after I added some lightning and shaded Cthulhu's wrinkles and muscles. And there you have it: the finished drawing of "Cthulhu Rising."

HERE WE ARE THE FINAL RENDITION
